STIRRUPS FOR SPEARGUNS

MIDLAND GO PRO AND UNDERWATER CAMERAS

Building up a stirrup to mount a camera on your own speargun is actually a very personal artwork, designed on the basis of one's own needs and speargun model.
For this reason it is easy to understand that it is not possible to create a stirrup that can fit all models and all needs. However we can list few points to bear in mind to build up a good one.

1. Materials should be as light in weight as possible like aluminum or Plexiglas

2. Speargun must be usable even if you do not mount the camera on. So if the stirrup is mounted directly on the gun it has to be very small. It happens very often that battery goes down or for several reasons you don't bring the camera with you then it would be nice to have not such an encumbrance (and maybe even heavy) if you do not have to film.

3. A good stirrup should also allow the camera to be interchangeable on all the spearguns you have, as when you are in the water it often happens you need to change gun. However not all spearos have for example the same model of speargun for the length 75cm, 90cm and 110cm so it is better to adopt an A+B solution. By adopting such a solution you have to create a small support fixed on each speargun that ends with the same kind of joint on which the stirrup itself is connected. This way while you are in the water the stirrup and the camera remain together all the time see article.

4. Joints should be easily opened in the water with gloves so knobs should substitute bolts, screws or gull wings. Furthermore, it would be smart to tie up, perhaps with nylon, the knob to the stirrup or the camera in order to avoid losing it in the water during changes.

On the basis of the aspects you can find below a selection of the best stirrups available on the net:

Inox steel stirrup to mount Midland xtc 200 or underwater camera cases.

GimanSUB produces several stirrup models: GIMANSUB spearguns, C4 carbon arbaletes, OMER Cayman, universal ones for woodenspearguns, etc. Dimensions and shape do not obstacle the speargun cocking and allow the camera a good visual without affecting the pointing. Their weight is about 40gr (according to the model).

Inox steel stirrup for Merou arbaletes

This stirrup has been designed for merou spearguns only, that are equipped with an extractable sternum support. Should you have more than one merou speargun you can easily switch the camera form one to the other even in water.
The only issue is related to the rearward position of the camera once it is mounted on the gun and that might obstacle the cocking step, however the designer confirms it has no effect on speargun normal use.
