OCTOPUS SPEARFISHING BANNED

From June 1 to September 30

The prefect of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region has submitted a proposal banning octopus spearfishing from 1st June to 30th September in the waters of the Mediterranean sea.

This is yet another action against French spearos, after the moratorium aimed to permanently ban groupers and corbs spearfishing, motivated by economic reasons.

The project was requested by the French fishery organizations to protect the species. At the end of the story, this should just be a biological rest period which should allow octopuses to lay their eggs in peace, but in fact it is easy to understand that this intervention only protects the professional fishermen.

This is evidenced by the fact that in such a period the only prohibited way to fish them is by hands under water. This is because such a way is considered to be the one with major impact on the species being more selective and practiced. If they really wanted to preserve the species they should have stopped its fishing by all means.

The French laws allows a period of consultation and until then the project is not yet in force, we hope that the Italian authorities do not make the same mistakes...
